The Chiefs could have a deal by the end of the week if not the end of the day with 325-pound nose tackle Shaun Smith.

Smith is a six-year veteran, having played with New Orleans, Cleveland and Cincinnati. His best seasons came with the Browns, thedn coached by Romeo Crennel.

Crennel is now the Chiefs defensive coordinator.

Smith was suspended for four games last season by the NFL for violation of the league's steroid policy.

The first free agent from outside the organization and signed by the Chiefs is a running back.

If they haven't already, the Chiefs need to place a call to the agent for former Indianapolis guard Ryan Lilja, arrange a visit for the former Shawnee Mission Northwest and Kansas State player and then get his autograph on a contract.

Lilja, who was released by the Colts, is what the Chiefs are looking for. They're looking for guys who know what it takes to get to the Super Bowl and Lilja, having played in two such games for Indianapolis, is one of them.

The contract could pay Chambers as much as $15 million. He is guaranteed a minimum of $5.9 million.

Chambers will be 32 in August but was the Chiefs best wide receiver after joining them at midseason last year. He caught 36 passes, four of them for touchdowns.

The player acquisition phase of the off-season, which opened last week with the start of the free-agent signing period and runs well beyond the draft, is a marathon and not a sprint. Teams like Chicago have already invested heavily, but history has shown that few clubs operating in that manner have received a good return on their dollars.

So, despite my mailbox being stuffed by Chiefs fans suggesting the off-season has already been ruined, there's plenty of time for the Chiefs to take care of their needs. One veteran running back, Thomas Jones, is scheduled to visit and another, Justin Fargas, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the Chiefs want to speak with him as well.

For the record, it took Marty Schottenheimer slightly less than three minutes to be overcome by emotion after he was named today as the latest member of the Chiefs Hall of Fame.

Those of you who had the over, go ahead and collect your winnings.

But Schottenheimer seemed genuinely touched by the honor.

''This to me,'' he said, pausing at this point to gather himself, ''is the highlight of my career.''
