Chiefs Continue "Strong" Interest In USC TE Anthony McCoy

Back at the NFL combine at the end of February, Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli called the incoming class of tight ends a strong group.

"Tight end is definitely one of the many positions we need to get better at this year and improve the talent -- both the frontline talent and the depth," he said.

And also at the NFL Combine, the Chiefs showed interest in USC TE Anthony McCoy having an informal chat with him. The National Football Post has joined the chorus reporting the Chiefs interest in McCoy.

USC tight end Anthony McCoy has boosted his draft stock with strong performances at the Senior Bowl and the NFL scouting combine. Projected as a second-round draft pick, McCoy is regarded as an all-around tight end in terms of blocking skills and pass-catching ability and route running.

Among the other teams showing interest, according to NFP, are the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks and the Cincinnati Bengals.

McCoy is projected to go in the 2nd-4th round depending on where you look.

The 6'5", 249 pound tight end was academically ineligible for the Trojans bowl game.

More People Envious Of Chiefs Deal With Thomas Jones

Thomas Jones only made one move in free agency and that was a trip to Kansas City. The Chiefs obviously didn't let him get away signing him to a two-year, $5 million contract.

ESPN's Adam Schefter has already called it one of the top five best moves of free agency so far and I think a lot of us agree with that.

The contract is short and doesn't include a lot of money, which is what you want when you're signing an accomplished, over-30 running back.

Rob Otto of MLive.com, beat writer for the Lions, admittedly said pre-free agency that pursuing Jones wouldn't be a good idea for the Lions. However, once he saw the kind of deal the Chiefs struck with him, he's singing a different tune.

Had I known that was all it was going to take to sign Jones, I would have had a different opinion.  I even think Detroit would have had a very good shot to land him because he would have ended up with more playing time here.

Not a bad thing to read, right?

Last week a report came out of the Providence Journal that the Kansas City Chiefs were pursuing former New England Patriots defensive lineman LeKevin Smith.

Smith is a 6'3", 308 pound defensive end with heavy 3-4 experience.

The Patriots traded him last August to the Denver Broncos.

The Chiefs might have been pursuing but they won't sign him.  According to the Denver Broncos official Twitter feed, Smith signed with Denver.

The Chiefs are already deep (and young) at defensive end so this isn't a major loss by any means.

Don’t sleep on the Chiefs’ signing of Arizona receiver Jerheme Urban. This is an under-the-radar player who always seems to make coaches fall in love with him.

He had an effect on Chiefs coach Todd Haley when he was the offensive coordinator in Arizona. That is a big reason the Chiefs signed Urban. Don’t be surprised if he becomes a rotational receiver in Kansas City.

Lilja failed Colts physical

According to Adam Caplan: NFL Reporter, Host-Sirius NFL Radio, profootball.scout.com, he did.

If this is old news to you guys, sorry. I just saw it.

Not saying we shouldn't snag him, but something else to consider.
