I thought I had gone through all the stages of Royals grief. Denial? Well, of course. I love denial. That has been my default stage as a sports fan most of my life. Hey, maybe Denny Bautista will become a star. Hey, maybe this is the year for Dee Brown. Hey, maybe José Guillen’s performance will not fall off a cliff. Hey, maybe Mike Jacobs will not play every day against lefties. And so on. Anger … I have never really felt much anger about the Royals. I was angry about some of the preposterously cheap moves the Royals have made, and I was angry about the way the organization mistreated Allard Baird at the end, but all that’s something else. I suppose the Yuniesky Betancourt trade probably triggered something like frustration, but only because of the Royals’ continued insistence that it was a good move. It seems pretty clear that Betancourt, because of his striking inability to hit or get on base or field or run or hustle, is not an especially good baseball player, but the Royals continue to say that, no, Betancourt is a very good baseball player, with a chance still to be great. And that makes me worry that maybe I’m the crazy one.

Friday, the Royals and outfielder Rick Ankiel agreed to a $3.25 million deal. Several brilliant readers have asked me what I think about this … and I have to admit complete bafflement on the subject.

So, here it is, Thanksgiving column XIV — by popular request. To start: I’m thankful to all the people who asked me to write this Thanksgiving column, even with a new job.

Not that I expect this to matter to anyone else, but I have a hard time identifying myself these days. Three months ago, I got my dream job as Senior Writer at Sports Illustrated. But, even now, those words don’t sound quite right to me. Whenever I introduce myself, I hear myself say: “Columnist at the Kansas City Star.” Sure, part of this is simply habit. I have worked at The Star since 1996, which doesn’t seem like that long ago until you remember that in 1996 the Yankees were chronic underachievers who had not won the World Series in almost two decades. The Chiefs were a perennial playoff team. Zack Greinke was a 12-year-old kid in Florida, Todd Haley had just given up his dream of becoming a PGA Tour golfer, and Bill Self was coaching basketball at Oral Roberts.

The one thing you get used to in Kansas City is learning how to appreciate athletes who perform valiantly when there isn’t much at stake. Well, it’s all we have left. The Chiefs have not won a playoff game in 15 years, and the Royals have played 24 straight seasons without making the playoffs. Still, the games go on, and here in the Heartland, we are left cheering Will Shields for still blocking hard in the mud during a lost season or Tony Gonzalez for catching 200 extra balls at practice to keep sharp or Mike Sweeney for cracking a double into the gap with the Royals about to lose again. Yes, it does get old after a while.
