As I sat watching Jared Allen destroy the offensive line of the Green Bay Packers, I reflected on the trade that sent Allen away from the Kansas City Chiefs. I think to myself how different the 2009 Chiefs would be with Allen eager to mash the opposing QB on every play.
Allen doesn’t slow down, he doesn’t take a play off, he doesn’t get tired in the fourth quarter and he doesn’t care if you think his mullet is stupid.
Simply put, Jared Allen is the best defensive player in the NFL. He makes his teammates around him better. When Allen isn’t pressuring the QB, he is drawing a double-team, allowing others to apply the pressure.
Since being traded to Minnesota, Allen has compiled 21 sacks, 6 more than the entire Chiefs team (10 in 2008 and 5 in 2009).
A pass rusher of Allen’s caliber does many things for the offense:
Puts the opposition in long-down situations
Takes pressure off the corner backs
Draws double-teams, allowing teammates to apply pressure
Requires a skill position (RB or TE) to help block, rather than run routes
Creates good field position for the offense
And simply too many more to mention
The loss of Allen for the Chiefs has been immensely more impactful than anyone could have imagined. In no way am I saying that Allen, alone, would have made the 2-14 Chiefs of 2008 a playoff contender, but I am saying Allen would have made the Chiefs a greatly more competitive team.
The Chiefs have now admitted they need a "pass catching tight end." So, GM Scott Pioli and Head Coach Todd Haley go out and sign one… Leonard Pope, a former Arizona Cardinal under Haley.
How productive was Pope in Todd Haley’s Arizona Cardinals system of 2007-08?
Pope pulled in 32 catches for 315 yards and 5 touchdowns in 19 games, and grabbed 2 balls for 21 yards in 3 postseason games… Woohoo!!! Also, I forgot to mention, Pope did not have a job since being cut by the Cardinals prior to the start of the season.
The Leonard Pope signing does nothing to help the Chiefs offense. Pope is primarily a pass catching tight end... Woohoo!! How can Pope catch a pass from Cassel when Cassel is continually on his back? Chiefs QBs have already been sacked 8 times.
The Chiefs need a pass blocking TE, not a pass catching TE, and according to ESPN.com, “Pope struggles as a blocker.”
The Chiefs had a great pass catching tight end... Oh ya, he was also a great blocking tight end... and the Chiefs traded him away. I said throughout the off season that 2008 was, by far, Tony Gonzalez's most impressive season. His 96 receptions, 1,058 yards and 10 TDs all in the top 1/3 of his career bests, but also in that modified shotgun for Thigpen Gonzalez was the lead blocker on most run plays.
I hope whoever the Chiefs draft with the 2nd round pick obtained from Atlanta completely fails. I simply cannot understand the philosophy of NFL teams in trading an older position player who is a top all-around performer at his position for a future draft pick.
What is the average NFL career? Less than 2 years, I believe. If Gonzalez plays 2 full years in Atlanta, then he will outperform anything Kansas City could possibly get in return.

The only 2 years he had more catches('07 & '04), the Chiefs made the playoffs
Tony's most impressive season, helped net the Chiefs two wins. Oh yeah, and he wanted to be traded. Maybe he could help us be 1-3 vs. 0-4.

I just heard Todd Haley say that Pope was one of his favorite players in AZ. If that were true, wouldn't he get the ball more? Doesn't favorite and best usually go hand-in-hand for a Coordinator or Coach?
The Chiefs have announced a trade with the Miami Dolphins and GM, Scott Pioli’s, father-in-law Executive VP of Football Operations, Bill Parcells. The Chiefs deal third string QB Tyler Thigpen for an undisclosed draft pick.
Injured Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington has a torn capsule in his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season, a league source confirmed to The Palm Beach Post Monday.
The trade of Thigpen is the second within the family. The first deal brought OG Andy Alleman to KC. Alleman has not played in a game this season for the Chiefs.
Thigpen will likely fall into the primary backup behind second year QB Chad Henne.
The Chiefs originally claimed Thigpen off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings in 2007. Thigpen went on to start eleven games for Herm Edwards' Chiefs in 2008, putting up a lot of passing yardage in the team's spread offense tailored specifically to Thigpen’s abilities.
Thigpen became obsolete when Todd Haley took over as the head coach, falling to third on the depth chart behind Matt Cassel and Brodie Croyle.
The Chiefs have been trying to deal Thigpen throughout the pre-season, and when the Dolphins came calling, Pioli was anxious to make a deal.

It appears, nationally, that Miami got the better end of this deal. WFAN out of New York and ESPN NFL Podcast both say that Miami won this trade.

I would rather have Thigpen on this team than Croyle.
