Join the Third Annual Very Official Ball Star Over-Under Challenge!

Thanks to everyone who volunteered to do the legwork on our little annual Over-Under Challenge here at Ball Star.

Our “winner” is a man named Ed, who wowed me with a plan and enthusiasm and, of course, the willingness to do all this for a $25 dinner gift certificate.

Anyway, let’s get to it. The ground rules shouldn’t be much different than past years:

• Picks should be done in the order presented here, e-mailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Please number them, 1 through 15, and put “OVER-UNDER” in the subject line.

Changes coming, hopefully for the better

Some of you may know that my bosses had a moment of weakness and decided to make me the Star’s new sports columnist.

My first attempt to fool them into thinking they made a good decision comes in Sunday’s paper, then hopefully four times or so a week after that.

But for the purposes of this post, I’m just letting you know that changes are coming to Ball Star.

Some details still need to be worked out, but we’re hoping to continue Ball Star with other writer(s) and I’ll have a new bloggy home on these here interwebs.

Just a reminder about the Royals' most important improvements, plus a plea for Over/Under help

The Royals will, most likely, lose a lot of games this year. Ninety seems like a good guess, which would be an improvement from last year’s disaster (97) but still a ways from being truly competitive.

There continues to be respect for the Royals’ efforts and direction around baseball, however -- even if some of the shine has dimmed.

The last few days, while reporting stories for spring training, I’ve heard from scouts or executives from four other clubs who say their perception is the Royals are doing most of the things necessary to become competitive.

On hoping we can end baseball's silly internal fight between pale stat nerds and sunburned scouts

John Dewan is the world’s leading expert on measuring defense in baseball.

He has devoted his life to this, he and his staff meticulously recording every play of every game (at least twice) to come up with a Plus/Minus system that does a better job rating defensive prowess than Gold Glove voting.

His work is somewhat controversial, because it occasionally goes against accepted and traditional scouting evaluations. It’s not hard to find old-school baseball men dismiss Dewan’s work as lacking a human element that data and computers just can’t duplicate.

Who is the Royals' leader? And does it matter?

You will hear different people say different things about the value of leadership in baseball.

Old-school folks tend to romanticize it, with grainy images of George Brett willing the Royals to win or Derek Jeter setting an attitude that anything less than a championship is unacceptable.

New-school views tend to oversimplify it, with arguments that Barry Bonds was a hell of a leader four times every game or that the best way to lead is to go 2-for-4 with two doubles.

Anxiety disorder impacts big leaguer across the campus, Zack Greinke's story provides the way

Down here in Surprise, spring training, and the big news is across the complex with the Rangers.

Khalil Greene, the infielder formerly with the Cardinals and Padres, won’t show up for tomorrow’s report date according to the scoop-happy Ken Rosenthal because of an anxiety disorder and could miss significant time.
