John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports the Houston Texans have agreed to terms with former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Wade Smith.

Smith spent the last two seasons (and a regime change) in Kansas City where he was at times a valuable part of the mix on the offensive line.

We've been tracking Smith's visits since the Chiefs let him become an unrestricted free agent last Friday.

He started off by making a visit to Buffalo, where there was later a press conference scheduled lending some to believe a day with the Bills was near. However, he left Buffalo and visited Houston, where he had dinner with Texans coach Gary Kubiak and visited the stadium.

On Monday he left Houston and made his way to Arizona for a visit with the Cardinals.

Two days later and he's a Texan.

This is the first unrestricted free agent to leave the Chiefs. They also re-signed Chris Chambers, Terrance Copper and Mike Vrabel.

Sean Ryan was reportedly drawing interest from the Redskins but remains unsigned. And I haven't heard a peep about Mike Brown or Bobby Wade.

The Quandary and Potential of DT Terrence Cody

When it comes to the upcoming draft, there's only one player that perfectly fits a position that's quickly becoming one of the most important in the NFL. Yet that same player comes with question marks of work ethic and conditioning that has him scaled much farther down draft boards than he should be -- a perplexing situation that might play out much differently than anything we're projecting come draft day.

The position? The 3-4 nose tackle.

The player? Terrence Cody.

Before you assume you know what's coming, just go with me for a minute (because you know you have nothing else to do anyway). Think about the situation at hand. More and more teams are moving to a 3-4 defense with each season, making good tackles in the scheme very hard to come by. The few that might have been available this year were all locked up - from Vince Wilfork to Casey Hampton to Aubrayo Franklin. The ones that were available are either entirely unproven or have their best days behind them. Not a pretty picture.

But look at the draft. As absolutely amazing as both Gerald McCoy and Ndamukong Suh will be in the NFL, neither one are the behemoth point-of-attack player that the 3-4 nose tackle calls for. Neither are Tennessee's Dan Williams, UCLA's Bryan Price or Penn State's Jared Odrick. All of these are predicted as first-round talents around most mock drafts, but all seem best suited in the 4-3 coming into the NFL. And as Chiefs fans, we've seen what happens when you take a great DT in college in Glenn Dorsey only to watch the shift take place before your eyes. Many of us love Dorsey, but we can all admit the debate has raged on for two seasons.

More after the jump:

Back to Cody. He's huge. We've all seen the photos of the 370 pound weigh-in. Jokes were made. People knocked him to the second round. Some have even hoped for lower-round talents to fill the spot at nose tackle rather than even use a possible second rounder on Cody. And that's not surprising given the lack of conditioning displayed early on in the off-season.

But what about now? Most recently, Cody weighed in at 249 349 and he seems to be applying himself to be in "good" shape. If this is the case, you have to assume he's rising up draft boards. Perhaps no one wants to talk about it because they want him to be there when they draft. Or perhaps he's an overrated, overweight player who could get away with subpar conditioning at the college level. Perhaps he will get eaten up in the NFL.

Then again, the rare level of talent at the position certainly makes Cody worth a look, right? I think if the Chiefs took Cody with the top pick, fans would riot. At the same time, I have a hard time believing the guy will last until the second round given the scarcity at the position.

So what do you guys think? First round? Second round? And if he could go in the first round, do you think it's worth the Chiefs trying to trade up back into the first round to get him?

Chiefs Signing Thomas Jones One Of The Best Free Agency Moves

I've been perusing the internet this afternoon and stumbled upon a piece by ESPN's Adam Schefter covering the top five moves of free agency so far. The top one -- Ravens acquiring Anquan Boldin -- is a no-brainer.

The second best move of free agency thus far, according to Schefter?

Well I guess the headline kinda gave it away.

After the Bears paid $7 million in guaranteed money to Chester Taylor, the Chiefs landed Thomas Jones for two seasons for $5 million. Talk about value. The $5 million also was $800,000 less than Jones was scheduled to earn this season in New York before the Jets released him. Taylor was a solid pickup, but Jones' signing topped it.

Taylor signed a four-year, $12.5 million contract with the Bears which is team friendly in the latter years. However, Taylor will earn more in year one ($7 million) than Jones will receive over the life of the contract.

Yeah, it's safe to say the Chiefs got a good deal here.

Details On Alabama, Kansas Pro Days

We've got some details filtering in on a few key players in the Alabama and Kansas pro day.

Alabama

First, nearly every team in the NFL is at the Alabama pro day so we've gotta assume the Chiefs are there as well.

LB Rolando McClain ran a 4.74 forty yard dash, which is about what he was expected to do. He didn't run at the NFL Combine due to an injury.

DT Terrence Cody weighed in at 348 pounds, which is excellent news for him. He started at 370 pounds at the Senior Bowl and got down to 354 pounds at the Combine.

Kansas

I'm told the following teams are there: BrownsEaglesJetsCowboysSteelersRavensVikings and Bears.

And, yes, the Chiefs are indeed there as well.

Former Chiefs RB Larry Johnson Visiting The Raiders And Redskins

Six days have gone by in free agency and there's been nothing on the future of free agent and former Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson.

Until now.

Redskins are scheduled to host a visit Thursday with former Chiefs and Bengals running back Larry Johnson.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting.

This move is a little perplexing if you ask me. The Redskins already have their over 30, broken down running back in Clinton Portis.

The one part of this I can make sense out of is the connection to Mike Shanahan. If you'll recall, back in LJ's day, he tore up the Broncos on a regular basis. And the coach at the time?

Mike Shanahan.

[Update: And I'm just now noticing, via the FanShots, that he's also visiting the Raiders. Wow.]
